CERAMIC
FaceOrAss

A more adult twist on the classic tic-tac-toe playground game, FaceOrAss invites viewers to engage with ambiguity, humor, and the uncanny. The piece replaces traditional Xs and Os with two iconic Lugocid-style elements: cartoonish faces and bulbous butts — both recurring motifs in my flexible materials work.

Rendered in glossy ceramic and painted in high-saturation yellow, the pieces take inspiration from toy aesthetics, particularly the modular heads of popular construction figures. Each form is double-sided: on one side, a grotesque-yet-charming Lugocid smile; on the other, a smooth, rounded derrière. The elements slide along three vertical rods within a hand-painted orange frame, encouraging playful physical interaction.

The exaggerated facial features — raised black eyes, wrinkled cheeks, and overstated lips — mirror the expressive vocabulary seen in my plush work like Mojo Buns Dad, giving continuity to my character design across mediums. The decision to equate a face with a butt pokes fun at identity, modularity, and perception — is it the front, or is it the rear?

This sculptural installation challenges the viewer to engage in juvenile games through a subversively sculpted lens, mixing nostalgia, absurdity, and discomfort in equal measure.
