CritCrate
Mixed-media sculpture and installation inside custom wooden crate
CritCrate is a satirical installation critiquing the commodification of art through the lens of secrecy, storage, and speculative capital. Inspired by the phenomenon of freeports—high-security storage facilities where priceless artworks are kept hidden from the public eye to avoid taxes and preserve their value as investment assets—this piece stages a theatrical reversal of that logic.
The work begins with a sealed wooden crate, unassuming and industrial. From within, unsettling scratching, squeaking, and rustling sounds suggest something alive—or many things—trapped inside. Once opened, the crate reveals a diorama inhabited not by museum-goers or collectors, but by oversized rats, cockroaches, and insects. These grotesque critters gather in awe before a mock painting, becoming the only audience for the forgotten “masterpieces” stored like currency.
